While Kyran Ewing was an absolute vision in her gorgeous white wedding dress, her 72-year-old grandmother and bridesmaid Joan stole the show.
Deciding on those few friends you trust to be your bridesmaids can be one of the toughest decisions for a bride.
But for Kyran, her number one choice had been obvious since she was a little girl.
Kyran married her long time love Jason during a ceremony at Laurance Wines in Yallingup in November and alongside her gorgeous twenty-something friends in deep blue dresses, her 72-year-old nanna Joan joined her on the altar.
“When Kyran asked me to be her bridesmaid I was really touched and very surprised,” Joan said.
“I didn’t think I’d heard of a nanna being a bridesmaid, so I had to think about it.”
Joan admitted she had been apprehensive at first to join her granddaughter’s bridal party.
“I didn’t want to spoil her lovely wedding photos being old amongst the beautiful young,” she said.
“I must admit doubting myself a bit on the day of the wedding, but I soon got over that and loved it all.”
Joan joined two other bridesmaids and altered her own dress in order to feel comfortable. When the time came, she was walked down the aisle by her husband, affectionately known as ‘grumps’.
Kyran’s decision stemmed from the special bond the two shared since she was young and said it had been incredibly important to have her grandmother join her other two bridesmaids.
“She was cautious at the beginning. It was something she hadn’t heard of before. Because in her mind she was going to be standing next to young people all dolled up and she’s a bit older but she looked beautiful as always,” Kyran added.
“It was so important to me that she felt appreciated by me and my husband. The fact that she said yes and was a part of my day has been so special.
“I can’t believe I get to have these beautiful photos forever.”
Joan was by Kyran’s side every step of the way and attended every bridesmaid event with her.
“She even sewed a part of her blue dress inside my wedding dress and my cousin’s dress this year for both our weddings as ‘something blue’,” Kyran said.
As for any other nannas hesitant to be a part of their granddaughter’s special day, Joan has a message:
“Accept it with joy and honour, maybe tweak things a little as I did, but go for it, it’s so special and what a compliment it is,” Joan said.
